FTP Mining

Important: Mining on FTP is notoriously difficult. Not only is it a competitive skill but as more and more people play Runescape, with no more rocks being added, it can be very hard to get any iron ores at all.

With this is mind... You have to find ways around the problem of not being able to mine any iron because someone else with a rune pickaxe and double your level is beating you to it all. The answer to this problem is to MINE TIN AND COPPER. Yup - tin and copper. Right up to level 41. I guarantee that by doing this you will reach level 40 before other miners who are mining iron. At level 41 you should buy and equip a rune pickaxe then start mining iron.

Pickaxes: Make sure you have equipped the best possible pickaxe for your level. If you can't afford one then get the money quickly by running air runes for an air company (check Runescape forums for this). To buy a pickaxe, go to the north west corner of the dwarven mines and speak to Nurmof.

Armour: When mining anything in Runescape, make sure that you are not wearing any armour at all. It adds to your weight and slows you down - so don't do it as its bad gaming.

Iron or coal: At level 60 mining you can enter the dwarven mines to mine coal. Don't bother mining coal before this as its a waste of time. The experience you get in the guild at level 60 is around the same as iron at this point so its fine to move into the guild straight away. Soon after level 60 the XP rate of coal starts to pull away from that of iron so there is no need at all to go back to iron after you have started in the guild.

If you need iron to mix with your coal then sell some of your coal in bulk, buy iron with the proceeds and make steel plates to high alch.

The method for this guide is as follows:

1-41 Tin and copper south east of Varrock
41-60 Iron south west of Varrock OR North of Al Kharid
60-99 Coal in the mining guild (in the Dwarven Mines)

1-41 Tin and copper
You should mine the two of these in equal measure so that you can use them later to gain valuable smithing levels. I've set the early level times to the level where you should equip the next pickaxe.
