Mining

Welcome to one of the toughest skills in the game (if not THE toughest). Mining can be a very rewarding skill but many players are put off it because of its continuous clicking and slow paced XP. It is this that makes the level 99 miners some of the best skillers in Runescape.

Before I get into the timing of the levelling system I'm going to talk about the 4 methods of mining. 3 of these methods are power methods so they will appear in my upcoming POWER section of this site. These methods are still well worth mentioning here as it is good to be aware of the different levelling systems available to you.

1. Mine banking (efficient): This is your standard and by far the most efficient way to mine. You mine all ores yourself and bank them all yourself at the closest bank.

2. Mine dropping (power): Not a recommended power system unless you cannot implement either of the other 2 power mining methods. The time it takes to drop 28 ores is not much less than the time it takes to bank 28 ores (especially at Yanville).

3. Mining with a runner (power): This is a good power levelling system as long as you can find runners who will run the ores for you consistently. Of course you won't be able to keep any of the ores - this is the pay for the runner/runners.

4. Mining with a dropper (power): By far the fastest power mining method. You mine 28 ores, give them to someone next to you who then drops them while you mine another 28 and repeat. It is difficult to implement though. Not only will you lose all your ores, you will have to pay the dropper several thousand gp an hour to work for you.

[[[If you are thinking about power mining to level 85 and runite then first consider this. Runite mining is tough and it gets more competitive all the time as more and more people reach level 85. A gamer with level 85 mining will struggle to make 2 mil gp mining runite on an average day so in my opinion level 85 is worth neither the effort put in or the money you will waste by power levelling. Take your time, bank your resources and level up your smithing too.]]]

The levelling system for this guide is as follows (all mine banking). All times are with using the best possible pickaxe for that level

1-15 Copper/tin at Varrock South East mine
15-99 Iron just north of Yanville

1-15 Copper and tin at Varrock south east mine
Although its possible to start mining at Yanville at level 1, most people will start mining at one of the Varrock mining sites. This is a good thing as players should try to familiarise themselves with all areas in Runescape.

15-99 Iron just north of Yanville
This is one of the best places in the game to level up your mining as it is very close to a bank. Because of the competitive nature of mining, you may need to change worlds if a better miner comes along and starts mining there. Common courtesy is to switch worlds if you find another miner already there but be warned - not all miners will show you this courtesy.
There are 5 basic variables which will effect your iron mining rate. These are:

Your mining level
Your pickaxe
Other miners with you on a higher mining level
The server you are on
The number of people on that server

Always make sure you have the best pickaxe for your level.

Try to avoid other high level miners where there are few rocks.

Choose a server as close to you as possible (geographically). If you are competing with someone who lives thousands of miles closer to the server you're on but you have a higher mining level then you will still lose.

Try to choose a server with at least 1000 players on it. The more people on a server, the faster the ore will regenerate.
